The Details in the Inhale

By Ashley Therese Poisella (owner of Ashley Therese Photography)

When people think about what makes up the “story” of a wedding day, they usually say the same thing: walking down the aisle, the vows, the first kiss, the introduction of couple at the reception, cutting the cake.  But for me, the true heart of a wedding day are the moments that fall in between – the moments that may go unnoticed and the details that color in the love story of the couple.  Being a photojournalistic photographer for me doesn’t just mean capturing the key candid moments of the day, but also the details in between.  The details in the inhale between the exhaling of emotion, conversation, and expected actions.  That’s where the sweet nectar of an amazing wedding day story lies.

I’ll be honest, to do this I am constantly aware of my surroundings.  When the bride is getting on her dress and her bridesmaids are laughing - while discussing their plan of attack to efficiently button all the 87 buttons with the crochet hook – I know where her mom is.  I know that sometimes she is a quiet observer, soaking in the beauty of the moment as her daughter puts on her wedding dress.  I know sometimes she stands in the frame of the doorway just taking it all in.  This will be a new chapter in her life with her little girl getting married and when the gown is on and the veil is placed on her head, that moment may just cause her to overflow with emotions.  Those candid detail shots are the makings of a wedding day.

I don’t want to be a wedding photographer that only captures a wedding day just the way a couple sees it. I want to capture what they may have missed or didn’t see.  I want to capture it from the eyes of the bride’s mom, the groom’s grandpa, and the ring bearer. I want to capture those sweet golden little moments in the inhale that really make their day what it was – breathtakingly special.
